Southwest Crushed by City Rival
Washburn
In a daring and close match,
Washburn HS pulled ahead of Southwest at the annual Miller Relays this
year. With four runners on a relay running a mile each, Southwest thought
that their line up might be able to pull ahead, but Washburn proved simply
to be too strong a force. Southwest was even seen going the wrong way on
the course, perhaps even changing the distance of the race to make it easier
for themselves. Says one Southwest runner, "We went the opposite direction
for the second mile, so it may have been a couple hundred meters farther,
or a couple hundred meters less." Regardless, Southwest lacked the speed
and depth to pull out ahead on the tough, soft, muddy and wet (not to mention
flooded) course by Lake Nokomis.
