Hudson: First Defeat Gives Men
Optimism
On Monday, the 23rd of
September, the Southwest Cross Country team ran a brutal, hilly 400 meter
repeat workout. The top men ran anywhere from 16 to 20 of them, while the
women ran 12 to 16. The next day, after a morning workout, the runners
traveled out to Hudson to face their biggest competition yet. During the
warmup, the Southwest men's third runner, Erik DeLapp, felt soreness in
his right hamstring and could not run the race. Varsity runner Bernabe
hurt his calf during the 400's and could not run. Francisco Vargas-Olalde
was not at the meet, and Austin Groth had to run an individual time trial
instead. This left five runners in the varsity men's race, four of the
normal top five. Even having run a tough workout the day before and missing
their third runner, the men's team finished a close second to Hudson, placing
four in the top ten. This race gave the runners confidence that once DeLapp's
hamstring gets better, their team will be ready for the bigger and important
races later in the season.
Forrest Tahdooahnippah
was narrowly beaten by nationally ranked Dustin Fier. His rank in state
has dropped to second under Garrett Heath of Winona, although Forrest has
not run against him this season. The men's team is now ranked 10th in the
state, their ranking falling slowly in the void where they have not run
many races.
